Making Progress

CLEARING A PATH TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Together, YMCAs and their partners have successfully engaged children and teens who live in communities with limited awareness or access to public lands, cultural and historical sites and outdoor recreational facilities in outdoor summer and fall programming opportunities. A key component of this program is to offer financial assistance to children and youth who may not be able to afford attending a youth outdoors program. Each year, YMCAs raise financial resources that more than match the National Park Service support to serve more youth and train more YMCA staff and young leaders in conservation, recreation and service.

In 2015, nine Ys and their partner National Park Service (NPS) sites launched the pilot Youth Outdoors Initiative. By 2019 and 2020, the program has expanded to 16 Ys and their national park partners and is only continuing to grow
